Digital Illustration is becoming a real obsession for almost all of you and I can understand it. Everyone of us would be very happy to make one like this Fighter done by Paperblue and published on Cghub.com.
The thing that I have hard time to understand is: why do you try to do such difficult illustration using your pc or tablette before you learn how to sketch, color theory and rendering techniques?
Often I receive minibooks of students asking me for a feedback and very often I find many digital illustration samples which do not have the right quality and most of all they are lacking in drawing and composition basic rules. This is a sign of wasting our time before using our time to learn first how to draw and how we organize a subject that later on we will render to make an amazing work of it!
So advice to all of you: be a master with your hands, pencils, colors, papers and only after try to learn how to render such master piece. A great rendering is made of:
Learn how to do this with your pencils canvas and guache or oil colors, use brushes. It is only after this step that you have all the rights to try on you PC or tablette with a nice digital software.

this car side view is my first try using a paint software on a computer. It was june 1993 Quantel device, I remember all of us very happy to sketch with a digital pen on a tablet watching a computer screen and some times doing it watching our first full size screen.
I remember scanning sketches or starting directly on that digital device…lots of fun!
Hope you like it!

Dear friends often I wrote about the importance of Figure Drawing in Car Design sketching, this beautiful example by Vadim Gousmanov shows how great, emotional and professional can be this type of drawing subjects. In the image there is a very good sense of proportions, compositions, warm and cool color control, focal point, drawing technique and digital media knowledge.
The digital media has been used very wisely without overworking the painting mastering it.
today we will talk about digital virtual modeling in car design. To be more precise we will focus on why it is important for a designer to manage digital modeling and how a designer should do it.
In a few words what type of attitude we should have (as designers) in front of an Alias workstation (computer) or a Rhino 3D one. There are many other softwares, but to explane myself I just named some of the most popular in the business today.
First of all why do we have to learn about digital modeling?
The answear is simple, since few years ( at least 10) the car design business and the automotive business understood that with the help of some softwares they could reduce drasticly their time process from idea to production. This is possible thanks to those softwares that give us the opportunity to model in virtual 3D the model we used to do in 1:1 scale in a longer time.
Today we can transfer a 2D car sketch into an Alias Autodesk program and…keep on reading clicking: How to work with Alias!
